Shackelford Banks and the Rachel Carson Preserve

June 24, 2012  •  Leave a Comment

Okay it was hot, but not too hot for a June day in North Carolina.  The horses were out and about and beautiful.  The day started out at the Rachel Carson Preserve in Beaufort.  The horses were gorgeous, grazing on the sea grass.  In the afternoon I traveled for the first time to Shackleford Banks by charter ferry.  It was a beautiful afternoon, boats everywhere and the beach at Cape Lookout was packed.  It was gorgeous but HOT!!!! The horses were few and far between and scattered around the island.  The Willets were vocal and kept up a constant chatter as they flew above my head. I fled the island as a thunderstorm blew in, knowing I would return in the morning and hoping for a horse and lighthouse shot even though I knew the chances were not great.  Day two brought a very hot morning.  I was attacked by mutant monster mosquitoes that were not deterred by mosquito repellant.  They were relentless.  The horses were nowhere to be found on the island, most were out munching sea grass in the sound, but the water was so deep there was no way to get close.  So I searched the island wandering through what is known as needle grass, and it's name applies everystep I was stabbed by this needle grass.  The ticks were jumping off the needle grass onto me (and I am terrified of ticks!), the mosquitoes swarming and biting, the needle grass stabbing, the heat excessive, and everywhre I wandered turned into mud quicksand where I was sinking up to my knees.  After a couple of hours this, and no horse pictures it gave me a real sense of how hard it is to get good nature and animal photos.  My adventure was nothing, I cannot even imagine what the photographes of Frozen Planet and other documentaries to go through.  After a hot, buggy morning on Shackelford Banks I was ready to go to to air conditioning, a shower, and a cold beer!  But don't worry horses I will be back :-)

My First Blog!

Ok I have no idea how to do this.  But I am updating my website watching an excruciatingly borring SF Giants game where they can't score a run so I thought I would give this a try!!!!  School is finally out and here is to a summer of photo workshops and traveling to new places to photograph. And a thanks to my husband Geoff who has enormous patience to help me change lenses, wait with me while I take shot after shot, and then sitting through my slide shows!
